Julian Bailey (b.1963)
Pembroke College Oxford JCR Art Collection
Painter and draughtsman, born in Cheshire. Bailey studied at Ruskin School of Art in Oxford and was a member of New College there, 1982–5, attending Royal Academy Schools, 1985–8. He was awarded the Egerton Coghill Landscape Prize (Oxford University), in 1984; the David Murray Landscape Award, in same year; the Turner Gold Medal at the Royal Academy Schools in 1986; and Landseer Scholarship in 1988. In 1989 Bailey visited Australia and the Far East, where the strength of light impressed him, as a painter whose debt was to the muted influences of Walter Sickert and the Camden Town Group. Mixed shows included RA, LG, Cadogan Contemporary and New Grafton Gallery, where he had his first solo show in 1991, later ones including more there and Browse & Darby, from 1999.
