Artist, mainly in oil, and teacher, born in Mitcham, Surrey, husband of the artist Helen Armstrong, their artist son being Joseph Armstrong. John Armstrong studied at Swindon, Walthamstow and Brighton art schools, his teaching including University of Brighton. Armstrong was a painter of Christian and spiritual subjects, a member of the International Society of Christian Artists, Christian Arts UK and the Society of Catholic Artists. The Byzantine and Sienese Schools were an influence. Also showed with the Society of Sussex Painters, at RA and Mall Galleries, and had solo exhibitions at Hove Museum & Art Gallery, 1975, Grange Art Gallery, Rottingdean, 1996, and St Raphael Gallery, 1999. Gerald Woods’ books Art of Landscape and Seascape Painting and Practical Oil Painting included Armstrong’s work.
