Painter, printmaker and teacher, born in Birmingham, where he attended the College of Art, 1947–52, winning the Jackson Travelling Scholarship. Was then at Royal College of Art, 1954–7, obtaining first-class honours and a Silver Medal (Painting). In 1957 he was included in Jack Beddington’s book Young Artists of Promise. Taught at Birmingham College of Art (Birmingham Polytechnic) from 1957–82, being made head of the painting school in 1974. Was on the West Midlands Arts fine art panel, 1975–8. His mixed shows included Young Contemporaries, 1956; RA; John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, 1958; Midland Art Now, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, 1977; Tegfryn Art Gallery, Menai, 1984; and The Birmingham School, City Art Gallery, 1990. Was elected RBSA and had a series of solo shows there from 1961; others included Oriel Gallery, Cardiff, 1983; Keele University, National Museum of Wales, in Cardiff, and Christopher Hull Gallery, all 1985; Birmingham Centenary Exhibition, 1989; and Brian Sinfield Gallery, Burford, 2003.
