The old label on this painting states Mrs Jones to have been the daughter of the celebrated Welsh writer Edward Edwards (Twm o’r Nant). Since Edwards’ daughter is said to have been the first wife of Reverend Arthur Jones, it is unclear if the lady portrayed here in old age is in fact his first wife or, more likely, his subsequent spouse. Reverend Jones, a minister and teacher from Llanrwst, worked in Liverpool and Denbigh, moved to London and then moved back to Bangor with his ministry. It is here that both this portrait and its companion portrait of Reverend Jones himself were probably painted. Mrs Jones is piously attired in a formal black dress and grey shawl, with a lace cap and bonnet. She is holding her spectacles and one hand rests on the bible she has momentarily stopped reading, in a conventional portrait pose.
