The Hulton family were principally associated with the governance of the law in Lancashire. William Hulton, depicted here as a boy of seven years, was elected to the office of High Sherriff of Lancashire in 1789. In 1785 he married Jane, daughter of Peter Brooke of Mere, Cheshire. Their son, William H. Hulton (1787–1864), is now blamed for instigating the 'Peterloo Massacre' at Manchester in 1819 by ordering the army to shoot the Chartist rioters.
