A carved and painted Japanese okimono consisting of a figure group entitled 'The Wrestlers' or 'Kawatso Saburo Overcoming Matano Goro'. The sculpture depicts Kawatso Saburo overcoming Matano Goro during a famous wrestling match in 1176. The pair are shown in the hold 'kawazu-gake' named after Saburo, the victor. The figures are set in a fighting circle, on a square wooden base. This item is possibly a miniature example of Iki-ningy.
