This funerary stele of a married couple dates from Hellenistic second century BC. Bought by 3rd Earl of Burlington, it was installed at base of an obelisk in the garden at Chiswick House, but later removed c.1988. A Roman marble grave stele from Asia Minor, once part of the Arundel Collection. The broken stele was one of several antique fragments rediscovered in 1712 during construction work by the Thames. Given to Lord Burlington c.1720, the stele was set into the base of an obelisk, designed by The Architect Earl, in 1732. The couple are depicted frontally. The man wears a Greek chiton and is wrapped in a himation, the folds of which support his right arm as the left hand reveals his sandals. The woman is dressed in Pudicitia style, her arms positioned symmetrically to her husband’s.
