This large portrait is reminiscent of work by the 20th century Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani whose work Wolfe would have known through his time spent in Paris during the 1920s.

In the painting Wolfe uses a series of curved shapes to lead our eyes around the painting. These shapes start with the model’s hair, work their way down through her shoulders and the top of her blouse and end up in the curves of her skirt and half opened fan.

Wolfe uses a lovely warm palette of colours in the painting, setting the complimentary colours of pink and green next to each other, both in the girls’ costume and in her skin.
