The statues flank the window of the entrance porch, with the earlier Saint Giles in the central niche. They were designed to turn to the visitor entering through the main door, but Saint Margaret escaping from the dragon, whose tail is wrapped around the saint, offers splendid views from the side. David Holgate’s Saint Benedict is a scaled down version of his figure on the façade of Norwich Cathedral, installed in 2000, with minor changes to the gesture with which he urges silence.
