A figure of a monk thought to be a version of Saint Bruno, after the French neoclassical sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. The work is inspired by Houdon’s commission by the Carthusian monks at Santa Maria degli Angeli in 1766 and his master Michel-Ange Slodtz’s Saint Bruno in St Peter's in Rome. This work is a smaller version, also in marble and with stylistic differences. The drapery has been scaled down to a few synchronised folds and the work's resonance resides in the differing solemn gaze of the monk.
