Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), like many other artists of that era, supervised assistants who carried out their work in his studio in Rome which he held for 40 years. We have researched some of the archives held at the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen and have discovered that a German sculptor named Ludwig von Hofer (1801–1887) received payment for work on an edition of this set on 8 March 1834. This has provided an insight that indicates that at least one other sculptor contributed to Thorvaldsen’s work and may be responsible for carving the marble reliefs held at the University of Sheffield. These are half of a set of four, the other two being Cupid and Bacchus, and Cupid Received by Anacreon. Thorvaldsen is believed to have produced plaster casts from c.
