The monument commemorates the sailing of the 'Mayflower' and 'Speedwell' from Southampton Quay in 1620. It features a tall rough-faced stone column on base of five-stepped stages and surmounted by a domed cupola on light slender fluted Ionic columns. On every second column there are carved corbels – three female heads, representing Faith, Hope and Charity – and the prow of a ship, facing the sea. The dome has mosaic work and is crowned by a bronze model of the 'Mayflower'.
