The building known as the 'Old Castle' is now home to Bridport Museum. It is a Tudor town house dating back to the early 16th century. Its earliest origins are unknown but it may have been the home of a chantry priest (a chantry was an endowment for a priest or priests to sing masses for the founder’s soul, and a chantry house was a building provided for one so endowed). For many generations it was known as 'The Castle' which may have derived from its proximity to the area known from early documents as Castleyhay (place of castle). The northern boundary of Anglo-Saxon and early Mediaeval Bridport lies a few feet north of the building and it is likely that a fortified or strengthened building would have stood at the entrance to the town.
