Physician to St Thomas' Hospital 1932–1956, Physician to St John's Hospital for Diseases of the Skin 1926–1956, Director of the Institute Of Dermatology 1951–1956. Dowling was born in Cape Town and trained at Guy’s Hospital. His medical training was interrupted by two years’ service in the First World War. In 1920 he graduated with honours in medicine. He held several posts at Guy's Hospital before specialising in dermatology.
