'Exposed Painting: Cadmium Red Pale/Orange' is one of a series of 'Exposed' paintings by Callum Innes. Although these works are similar in appearance to some minimalist abstract paintings of the 1960s, they are different because of Innes' approach. He uses turpentine to remove coloured paint from the canvas, revealing the white primed layer below. The bright-red orange rectangle here is not simply the dominant 'positive' form in the painting. Part of the area once occupied by this rectangle has been dissolved, staining the canvas slightly in the process, and making the paint look as if it is running out from the formal constraints of this shape.
