Before its unveiling on 7th December 1922, this statue of the Prince of Wales was whitewashed and a cravat and pipe added. But these unofficial adaptions were spotted by a porter who cleaned it up in time. It was later also a focus for nationalist students in the 1960s and 1970s when the head was temporarily removed.
