The interior of this cottage with its low ceiling, mullioned windows, window seat and whitewashed walls is found in numerous paintings of the Newlyn School. Walter Langley was one of the first artists to settle in Newlyn in Cornwall, arriving in 1882, but this is a late work. There are no references to the dangers and tragedies of the fishing industry and 'Day Dreams' is not so sad as many of his paintings. He gives no indication of the nature of the wife's thoughts, but the cosy safety of the child suggests the mother may be dreaming of a more secure life for them away from the perils of the sea.
