These angel musicians are in the Italianate style favoured by Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones (1833–1898) work the 1870s. The designs were first used for a window in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, in 1875, although this window was made much later. During the 1880s Burne-Jones' style underwent a significant change. Later windows, such as those in Birmingham Cathedral, show the profound impact of Byzantine mosaics, both in the hieratic, elongated figure drawing and in the technique that uses small pieces of glass and dense, assertive leading.
