Painter and teacher, born in St Albans, Hertfordshire. His work, produced with thin layers of paint, contained figurative and non-figurative images, was Minimal and metaphorical in style, establishing moods of lyricism, tension and fear. He studied at Luton School of Art, 1962–4; Chelsea School of Art, 1964–7, in the latter year winning a Boise Scholarship to France; had a postgraduate painting year at Chelsea, 1967–8. Living in London, he taught at Brighton College of Art for a time. Mixed shows included Young Contemporaries from 1965, and Space at the Midland Group Gallery, Nottingham, 1971. Early solo shows included Arts Council Serpentine Gallery, 1971, and Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, 1972; later ones included Lisson Gallery, 1985, Whitechapel and Arnolfini, Bristol, 1987–8, and Southampton City Art Gallery, 1999.
