Saltram, accepted in lieu of tax and transferred to the National Trust in 1957, has the finest groups of portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds who came from nearby Plympton. He was patronised by John Parker I (1703–1768) and his wife, née Lady Catherine Poulett (1706–1758), their son, John Parker II (1734–1788), 1st Baron Boringdon and his wife the Honourable Theresa Robinson (1744–1775), as well as by their son, John Parker III (1772–1840), 1st Earl of Morley, who also imported Orazio Samacchini’s altarpiece from a church in Bologna, in 1819. There are nine commissioned paintings from Angelica Kauffman, Reynolds’s friend and Royal Academy co-founder, who later married Antonio Zucchi, whose works form part of the Robert Adam decorative scheme. Notable Old Masters remaining in the collection are a portrait by Rubens of Vincenzo Gonzaga II, with Charles I’s collection seal on the back, a tavern scene by Pieter de Hooch and a very fine early copy of Titian’s 'The Andrians' in a superb frame by Chippendale.
