More about

King's House is the former hunting lodge of King James I and reputedly occupies the site of the medieval manor house, which belonged to the Lords of the Manor of Thetford. The property was left in the will of George W Staniforth to the then Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of the Borough of Thetford for use of the people therin. This was confirmed by a Charity Commission order of 1949. The Town Council now runs this under charitable status as sole corporate trustees and therefore maintain the House and substantial gardens, the latter of which are open daily to the public.
