The Faculty of Mathematics is housed in one of the most exciting modern buildings in Cambridge: a series of seven futuristic pavilions arranged in a parabola around a central core with a grass-covered roof all designed by Edward Cullinan Architects and completed in 2003. It provides an extraordinary contrast to the antiquity of many other University and College buildings across the River Cam. Of the three fine portraits held here the large round one depicting Professor Stephen Hawking, the eminent scientist, painted by Tai-Shan Shierenbrg and commissioned by Dame Stephanie Shirley is the most memorable. The other two portraits are Rupert Shephard’s of George Bachelor (1984) and a Ruskin Spear of G. I.Taylor painted in 1965.
The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics is not open to the public.
