More about

Caerphilly County Borough Council boasts a charming collection of paintings of local scenes and churches, which hang outside the Mayor’s Parlour in the council headquarters, Penallta House. The collection, all from the easel of local artist Obediah 'Obed' Hodges, showcases the picturesque places of worship in Caerphilly County Borough during the early 1900s. The art collection began in 1990 as a platform to exhibit paintings with local relevance and which display the beauty of the Borough. In addition to the impressive art on show, the collection possesses the original palette of the artist, donated by a local resident. Obediah Hodges was an artist with a talent for portraying the beauty of his local community, Mynyddislwyn, and the surrounding area. Each painting purchased for the collection represents a rare piece of local history, as art created by him is seldom seen in auction. Paintings in the collection include 'Bedwellty Church' painted in 1919, and 'Mynyddislwyn Church', painted in 1923.
