Thomas Jones painted this piece in 1782 from the roof terrace of the artist’s lodgings opposite the Dogana del Sale in Naples. It was part of a number of personal oil sketches that were not intended for sale or exhibition which appeared on the art market in 1954. They are viewed as some of the most innovative pictures of that time.

Buildings in Naples captures the humble surroundings of the artist’s daily life in Italy, a country he was drawn to in 1776. The piece focuses on a classic Neapolitan house with a city rooftop view in the background. Jones beautifully portrays every fine detail of the house, from the cracks and missing chunks in the plaster walls to the half-shuttered windows letting in the sunlight.

Art UK Shop and Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales have selected this piece as part our special edition Curator’s Choice range.
