'I love this painting by Edward Southall. Although it was painted over 100 years ago it captures a scene which is still familiar to us today – the excited face of the child on her way to the beach, the woman in the foreground holding her hat on against a stiff sea breeze, and other adults holding bits of essential beach kit such as a spade and toy boat. The setting was contemporary for Southall, but the composition and the colour show the influence of the Italian Renaissance artists, whom Southall studied during travels around Europe. It makes me think I should up my game a bit glamour-wise next time I take my kids to the beach as well.'
