Dr Robert De Mey qualified MB ChB from The University of Edinburgh in 1985, trained in General Practice and then in Psychiatry. He is currently working as a Consultant Psychiatrist for older adults in Scotland. He is a keen amateur musician and led the Ayr Camerata Orchestra until 2021. Between 2008 and 2021, Robert De Mey was the Chair of Maybole and then of the Ayrshire Young Arts programme, arranging artist-led activities and an annual weekend arts festival for local communities.
Robert De Mey completed a monograph on Ronald Rae in 2023, and in the same year curated a joint retrospective public exhibition, 'ConvergeDiverge', which covered the lifelong friendship between Gordon Cockburn and Ronald Rae, within themes of alienation, mental disorder, discrimination and war. The exhibition toured Rozelle House in Ayr, Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries, and the Baird Institute in Cumnock, under a partnership arrangement. 'ConvergeDiverge' was reviewed by The Times in February 2024.
