In 2010 the Hepworth Family Gift of 44 sculptures by Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975) were presented to the town of Wakefield through The Art Fund. Mainly prototypes, the first stage in the process of casting a bronze or aluminium work, they are original plasters that Hepworth worked on with her own hands. They form the core of the Hepworth Wakefield, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, and which opened to the public in 2011. Now integrated with the contents of the original Wakefield Art Gallery, established in 1934 and which had itself supported artists including Hepworth and Henry Moore early in their careers.
