Founded in 1884 with a founding collection from granite merchant Alexander Macdonald in 1900, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds one of the finest collections of 20th Century artworks in the United Kingdom. Acquisitions made by the art gallery committee and a succession of directors have been judicious, quite often before artistic reputations have been established. There are particular strengths in holdings of Camden Town Group artists, Scottish Colourists and sculpture, whilst it was also bequeathed the entire archive of James McBey. Most notable is perhaps Francis Bacon's Pope I (Study after Pope Innocent X by Diego Velázquez). The second of two Curations, this one covering James Dickson Innes to Ossip Zadkine.

Artists featured in this Curation: James Dickson Innes (1887–1914), David Jagger (1891–1958), Augustus Edwin John (1878–1961), Gwen John (1876–1939), Dorothy Johnstone (1892–1980), Clara Klinghoffer (1900–1970), Harold Knight (1874–1961), Laura Knight (1877–1970), Henry Herbert La Thangue (1859–1929), Georges Lacombe (1868–1916), and 76 more
