Founded in 1884 with a founding collection from granite merchant Alexander Macdonald in 1900, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds one of the finest collections of 20th Century artworks in the United Kingdom. Acquisitions made by the art gallery committee and a succession of directors have been judicious, quite often before artistic reputations have been established. There are particular strengths in holdings of Camden Town Group artists, Scottish Colourists and sculpture, whilst it was also bequeathed the entire archive of James McBey. Most notable is perhaps Francis Bacon's Pope I (Study after Pope Innocent X by Diego Velázquez). The first of two Curations, the first covering Jankel Adler to George Leslie Hunter.

Artists featured in this Curation: Jankel Adler (1895–1949), John Arthur Malcolm Aldridge (1905–1983), Leonard Appelbee (1914–2000), Mary Nicol Neill Armour (1902–2000), John Armstrong (1893–1973), Frank Helmuth Auerbach (1931–2024), Michael Ayrton (1921–1975), Francis Bacon (1909–1992), Edward Baird (1904–1949), Barbara Balmer (1929–2017), and 67 more
