This painting portrays the loss of the paddle steamer 'Forfarshire' in September 1838, when she ran into rocks in a fierce storm near the Longstone Lighthouse, an active nineteenth-century lighthouse located on Longstone Rock in the outer group of the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast. This was the scene of the famous rescue attempt by Grace Darling and her father William, the lighthouse keeper. Many passengers and crew were lost, and some of the names of the lost souls are written in the ’seaweed’ along the seabed.
