Carborundum had recently purchased the Spode company when this painting was executed. The artist was the Design Director of Spode and famous for surface patterns on Spode ceramics, most significantly 'Christmas Tree' pattern. The portrait was not in his normal line of work at the Spode company but this is a well-executed amateur portrait reflecting Holdway's wide range of abitlites.
