William Wegg (1815-1893) was born in Greenwich, and studied medicine at Caius College, Cambridge. After qualifying he settled in London. He had a private income and never attempted to build up a practice for himself. For a time he was physician to the St George’s and St James’s Dispensary. He was, however, an active member of the Royal College of Physicians. He was the Curator of the museum there from 1858 until his death in 1893, and a censor in 1867 and 1868. He was also treasurer of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society for eight years.

The portrait was painted in 1883 by Walter William Ouless, a British portrait painter from Jersey. Ouless was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and exhibited this portrait there in 1883.
