William Thomas Brande began his career studying medicine but his interests moved towards chemistry after meeting Humphry Davy. He soon started lecturing on the subject and in 1813 succeeded Davy at the Royal Institution, where he established a lecture course for medical students. From 1823 Brande was also closely associated with the Royal Mint, becoming Superintendent of the Coining and Die Department in 1852.

Brande was a key figure in maintaining the Ri’s stability after Davy's departure. He was not a major researcher in the sense of Davy or Faraday, instead his strengths lay in communicating science: he was an effective lecturer and wrote several important scientific textbooks.

It is unknown when or why this portrait was painted, only that it was completed prior to 1830 when it was donated to the Ri.
