Stuart was the son of another William Stuart, an Irish Archbishop. The family resided at Aldenham Abbey, a country estate near Watford. As well as his Masonic endeavours he was an MP for Bedfordshire. His son, also William, would follow him into the Craft and likewise become a Provincial Grand Master, this time for Bedfordshire.

The portrait is based on an 1866 carte-de-visite photograph by Miss Rosenthal (active 1864–1871), who was either the wife or daughter of the artist.
