King William IV (1765–1837) became a Freemason in 1786. The following year he was given the honorary title of Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England, one of two governing bodies of Freemasonry in England in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. In this portrait he is wearing the collar of the Master, or Ruler, of the Prince of Wales Lodge No.259, a position he held from 1827 to 1830. The Lodge was established in 1787 and was named after William’s brother, George (1762–1830), Prince of Wales, later George IV. Unlike other Masonic lodges in England, it has its own unique regalia, identified here by the ostrich feather crest of the Prince of Wales. The original of this portrait is owned by the Lodge.
