Wilkes was an early supporter of the Museum and member of the Museum’s management committee.

This half-length portrait shows him in a relaxed seated pose, probably in his office. He died in 1899, leaving the Museum his significant ceramics collection and part of his residuary estate. The latter was a significant financial contribution that led to the formation of the ‘Wilkes scheme’ through which the Museum became a charity.
