William Cullen was born in Hamilton and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He graduated MD at Glasgow University in 1740 and moved from Hamilton, where he was a medical practitioner, to Glasgow in 1744. He taught medicine and later chemistry and materia medica at the University of Glasgow until 1755 when he accepted the post of Professor of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. He subsequently held the Chair of the Practice of Physic. He was one of the most read and respected physicians of the second half of the eighteenth century.
