A marble bust of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (d.1811). Grandson of Richard Boyle, The Architect Earl, who designed and built Chiswick House. An autograph version of the original, based on the Duke’s death mask, completed with reference to a portrait by Joshua Reynolds (1776). William is presented posthumously, as a younger man. His head rises and tilts to the left. His hair, swept back, curls around the ears. He wears classical, Roman style drapery and his chest is partially exposed. One of at least four produced in 1812 by the workshop of Joseph Nollekens. The first was commissioned by William’s son, the 6th ‘Bachelor’ Duke (Chatsworth). The second, for his close friend George IV, then Prince Regent and Nollekens’ patron (Windsor Castle).
