Inscription description
This ceramic mural was commissioned by Tesco from local artists / Philippa Threlfall and Kennedy Collings / to mark the opening of the store in November 1991. / The mural is based on the William Simes map of the / City of Wells of 1735 / The map is full of interest and show the virtually unchanged / shape of a medieval city. Extraordinarily in wells / the street plan and many of the names and buildings / exist virtually unchanged to this day apart from the 19th Century / addition of Priory Road and Princes Road. / The drawing of the individual houses should not be taken too / literally, but te general accuracy and abundance of detail / is remarkable. / Buildings which have disappeared include the guildhall in the middle of the Market Place, the Market cross / and the market houses down the middle of the High Street. / The water of Wells or St. Andrews Stream is shown rising by / the Cathedral, filling the Palace Moat and thereafter / forming a number of streams driving at least five miles, / remains of which can be seen in the City. The Compass Rose at the bottom left of the mural indicates / the position of the Tesco Store where you stand.
