small plaque on wall to left: THIS FOUNTAIN WAS FORMERLY SITUATED / AT THE SOUTH-EAST CORNER OF THE OLD / TOWN BRIDGE AND RE-INSTALLED IN THIS / POSITION BY THE CHARTER TRUSTEES. / Councillor John Chambers, J.P. / Mayor of Chippenham / April, 1980; inscription on trough: MONKTON SPRING. / THIS WATER WAS GIVEN TO THE / TOWN OF CHIPPENHAM / BY G.M.M. ESMEADE ESQUIRE / AND THE EXPENSE OF CONVEYING IT / TO THIS SPOT WAS DEFRAYED / BY SIR JOHN NEELD BART / JAMES WHARRY MAYOR. OCTOBER. 1864
