Gene Davis was a self-taught American artist who started work as a journalist. He was a member of a group known as the Washington Colour Painters, following an exhibition of this name in 1965. Other members were Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland who had been instrumental in the development of 'colour-field' painting which explored the relationship between areas of flat colour on large surfaces. The cool minimalist style they adopted has been seen as a reaction to the more hectic 'action painting' of artists such as Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock.

In this painting Davis used hard-edged stripes to explore the dynamics of colour and space.
