This work is an accompaniment to Smith's 'Art History' (1987) which also includes crocheted doily material. The doily would often be used as a coaster, or for simple display purposes, and was a feature found in a typical Jamaican sitting room in the 1960s. In this work, Smith centres our attention on a doily in brightly coloured cotton, found in her mother's possessions; she has used a solution of sugar and water to stiffen the fabric. The use of sugar is not only a way in which to make the cotton rigid; it also references the transatlantic slave trade. The doily has been arranged to resemble a masquerade stilt dancer poised in an energetic stance, free from constraints, suggesting carnival spirit.
