Calum Colvin was commissioned in February 1997 to create a new artwork for St John's Hospital at Howden, using the hospital environment. Over a period of six weeks, the artist constructed an installation in a room in the hospital, using old hospital equipment, paint and lighting. He then photographed the completed installation to create the finished piece, 'Three Graces for St John's'.

The room containing the intact installation could be viewed at St John's Hospital, by appointment, until the end of July 1997.
