The bronze figure of Chatterton sits informally on a public bench. He was originally reading a ‘sheet of paper’, now detached and in store, in his raised left hand. His clothes – a loose shirt, close fitting breeches, stockings and plain shoes – are based on those in Henry Wallis’s painting depicting his suicide. Much of the surface of the bronze is textured. The inscription on the papers at his feet is from 'a mock suicide note he wrote to shock his employer into releasing him from his indentures' when he was still in Bristol.
