Previously documented as depicting Thomas Callaway Junior (1822–1869), this painting has been identified as a portrait of his father, Thomas Callaway Sen. (in 2023). Father and son were both well-respected surgeons who worked at Guy’s Hospital. Calloway Senior lived with his grandfather who was Steward of Guy's Hospital. He became an apprentice to Sir Astley Cooper in 1809 and was elected a member of the College of Surgeons in 1821. In 1825 he was appointed Assistant Surgeon to Guy's Hospital. He had a successful, large private practice in south London through which he amassed 'a considerable fortune'. In 1841 he gave the Hunterian Oration at the Royal College of Surgeons and he resigned from Guy's in 1847. This painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy exhibition in 1843 (no 490).
