As the 1357 fraternity and the 1373 hospital were dedicated to Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the 1430 Guild of Mercers burned candles annually before her, it is very likely that this represents the Virgin; and was defaced during the Reformation or the upheaval of the Civil War.
In 1997 the statue was placed on a plinth on the end wall of the chapel to the right of the altar, more or less the position for the image of a second patron saint (the left side would be for the primary patron saint, in this case Jesus Christ or the Holy Trinity).
