When he painted this still life in 1931, Georges Braque enjoyed a considerable reputation as a founding member of Fauvism and Cubism. Still lifes allowed him to explore the relation of everyday objects in varied arrangements. This painting recalls Braque's Cubist paintings from 1911, although the paint, applied rather dry, the scratched background and fragmented form are treated differently.
