The Shire Hall still stands at the top of Chelmsford's High Street, one of the few old buildings in the town centre. Designed by John Johnson, the County Surveyor, it was opened in 1791. The interior included law courts, a room for the Grand Jury, a market hall for the sale of corn, and an assembly room. Ornamental features including the plaques of Mercy, Wisdom and Justice were made from Coade stone. The painting is contemporary with the completion of the building.
