A portrait by an unknown artist formerly known as The Ellenborough Portrait, oil on panel, c.1615. Thought to be a copy of the Cobbe Portrait which is considered to be a portrait of William Shakespeare. It is a head and shoulders portrait of a man with brown hair and a beard, high and broad white lace collar, black doublet with gold braid detailing and gold buttons. The early provenance of the painting is unclear but Ellenborough married Jane Digby in 1824. She was a direct descendant of the 3rd Earl of Southampton and great-great granddaughter of Lady Elizabeth Norton's sister Jane who married the 5th Lord Digby and who inherited from her mother; the eldest of the Wriothesley heiresses, a number of Wriothesley pictures. This opens the possibility that the Shakespeare Birthplace Portrait could have had the same early provenance as the Cobbe portrait.
