Painted in 1911, the title of this work is taken from Saint Matthew’s gospel in the Bible. It is an image which shows Judas, who had been given thirty pieces of silver for betraying Christ, realised the wrong that he had done. He threw down the silver in the temple, went to the Potters field and hanged himself. The painting is very dark but the colours are vibrant. Many people think that the painting is dirty; it is however true to the subject matter. It happened at dawn and the lightening sky can be seen in the distance. The artist had completed all but the face of the picture, being unable to find a suitable sitter. He was in Rhos-on-Sea in North Wales, painting the portrait of Wwfa Môn, The Archdruid. He painted in the morning and walked in the afternoon.
